Numeracy in the Early Years

We believe that students learn through play, but that play must be intentional and that there are developmental learning trajectories that teachers need to be aware of, even when students are building with blocks.

Young children have a conceptual understanding of mathematics and mathematical thinking and reasoning.

Number Sense

Understand numbers used for counting and measuring and that numbers and quantities can get bigger or smaller.

Geometry

Describe, sort, classify, build and compare 2D and 3D shapes.

Describe the location and movement of objects through investigation.

Measurement

Measure, compare length, mass, capacity, area, temperature of objects/materials, passage of time, using objects of different size.

Patterning

Explore, recognize, describe and create patterns.

Data Management and Probability

Sort, classify, display concrete objects, collect data, begin to read, describe displays of data.

Begin to explore concept of probability in everyday contexts.
